E3 2012

E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) is one of my favourites times of the year.  It’s even better than Christmas in a way.

This year is interesting mainly because all eyes are on Nintendo and its Wii U console.

Here is a list of the UK times (GMT) I put together for those who don’t want to miss the live stream presentations from all the big console manufacturers and publishers.  I’ve also included some sites where I usually watch my live streams.  It’s never a bad plan to have a back up in case one site fails.

MONDAY 4TH JUNE

  • Microsoft:        6pm
  • EA:                     9pm
  • Ubisoft:            11pm

TUESDAY 5TH JUNE

  • Sony:                 2am
  • Nintendo:         5pm

Iphone game- angry brids

Ever since the explosion of mobile gaming especially on the iPhone, most game journalists shoot down any talk of handheld game devices.

Yes I can see their point when factors like convenience and price of the games chip in but not everyone eats from the same bowl.  Their arguments are even made stronger with the weak sales of the recently launched Nintendo 3DS which had a poor launch and has had to cut prices.

Well for me, I’m completely opposite these opinions and get frustrated at journalists who have sunk too deep with their own consumer behaviour and automatically shade everyone as the same.

The Sony PS Vita to be released early 2012. Some are already calling its doom even before launch.

Of course mobile gaming is huge but everyone needs to think critically for once.  People buy phones primarily for calls and extra features like its software, e.g Apple IOS or the Andiod devices.  The phone market is obviously bigger than gaming in terms of penetration and this has given many people the opportunity to get into games.  I think gaming took off on these devices due to the lower barrier of entry from the low price and simple game mechanics.

But for someone like me seeing that I had the first Android phone ever (Google G1) and and Ipod touch with experience on playing games on both, I hate smart phone/mobile games.  And here’s why.  I do not like games that are solely based on touch screen cause it doesn’t feel good to play (Buttons are still awesome!).  Why people play Street Fighter on an Iphone makes me confused.  I’m also not into very simple mechanic games like Cut the Rope.

Some people might argue that handheld games are console like and they would prefer to play that at home.  A valid point but not all handheld games are like that! Take my PSPgo for example, I’ve enjoyed countless hours of simple but deep games like Pixel Junk Monsters and Disgaea.  Such games with interesting stories or deep content are lacking on the App store.  At least to my knowledge.

You can only get games like Mario Kart DS

Another argument I’ve heard is that handhelds like the PS Vita are too heavy or to big to carry around.  But wait, these same people are raving about games on the Ipad!?  A tablet probably two times or three times bigger than a PSP or DS.

I know mobile games appeal to some but some people should understand that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.  And not everyone has an iPhone! It’s quite irritating hearing even industry analysts like Patcher talk like everyone has one.  Handhelds are here to stay and I’m always excited and supportive of them whether it’s from Nintendo or Sony.

It’s quality over quantity.

What’s your opinion?

Microsoft kinect

Microsoft’s E3 2011 was jam packed with upcoming kinect titles from those with full implementation to subtle game play additions.  After selling 10 millions kinects, who could blame Microsoft.

I on the other hand believe the kinect could be a better use for everyday life situations rather video games.  There are a hand pick of games like Dance central and the recent Child of Eden that stand out but are we really going to be waving our hands in long term.  And how many of these games are any good.  Why should I spend more than £100 on a device I might play a few times with one game?

platinum trophy

There is a satisfying feeling when you here that ‘ding’ sound from your TV and that little pop up appears- (You’ve just finished the game on hardcore).  As parody CEO of Sony Kevin Butler put it, ‘Staying up till 3am to earn a trophy that isn’t real…but is’.

Trophies/Achievements have made gaming good and bad to a point.  It’s made games more competitive with your friends which is always fun.  They’ve also changed how we play games.  It gives players the urge to explore the game even further unlocking some more entertaining play time we didn’t know was there.

Imagine fighting with Aizen using Naruto or Itachi using his genjutsu on Zaraki Kenpachi (Sick right?!).  That’s what we’re led to believe with the trailer of a new online game called Pockie Ninja.

You cannot imagine how excited I was after seeing it and I cannot wait to play it.  With what I’ve heard so far it’s a MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game meaning you play with other people online if anyone doesn’t know what MMO means and I’m guessing its free.

Well, it looks like something is cooking in Sony’s pot and I hope it’s something good.  Sony announced that it will be making an exclusive PlayStation 3 reveal on Sunday, December 12, 2010.

WOOO! I cannot wait.  Well people are guessing it’s most likely to be Uncharted 3, Sly 4 or maybe something about Resistance 3 but I personally think it’s going to be a brand new IP!

My gut feeling tells me it’s going to be a completely brand new title that has something to do with the PlayStation Move.  Something crazy that will make people run to get a Move the next day.  Anyways, let’s see.

Mark your calendar people, 12 of December.

I think it’s going to be a crazy brand new game for the Move
